Perfect Pairings: 5 Style Rules to Rock Your Look
Sets are a great solution for more flexible wardrobe choices but mixing and matching garments, especially those made of printed fabrics, can be very tricky. It's easy to let the prints overwhelm you or let them clash or even let them overtake you with their uniform "pajamas" look.
But when you need an instant outfit, sets are a quick and easy answer to ‘What should I wear?’ Sets are also a great wardrobe extender. Mix and match your tops and bottoms to create dozens of outfits.
Here are five simple rules for creating perfect looking active and casual wear sets of garments that sport similar or the same looking prints:
Rule 1. Long Bottom + Short Top.
For colorful leggings, the best match is a sports bra or a crop tee or tank. A little bit of a belly showing creates enough of a visual break in patterns to draw attention to your body type and spark interest. Great for people with long and skinny waists.
Rule 2. Tight Top + Loose Bottom.
A tight fitting top with a flared (skater) skirt will emphasize your curves and make your silhouette seem like it's flowing with grace. Add a belt to accent your waist.
Rule 3. Loose Top + Tight Bottom.
Pencil skirts and tight fitting leggings work well with loose, oversize tops such as sweatshirts, hoodies or crop tees. Hoodies and sweatshirts are great for people who don't want to bring attention to their waists. They will also make you feel free and comfy. Crop tees balance well short waists.
Rule 4. Complementing Patterns.
If you mix patterns, make sure that they complement each other. Choose them from the same series of prints.
Rule 5. One Garment with Solid Color or Calmer Pattern.
This combo always works great and never looks like pajamas :)
